Football Shutout by Dutch in Iowa Conference Opener

Box Score

The Buena Vista football team was in the redzone on three separate trips on Saturday afternoon but came away scoreless each time, and Central was able to capitalize on those missed opportunities en route to a 33-0 victory in the Iowa Conference opener for both teams played in Pella.

TJ Lint had a career-day in a losing effort for the Beavers, setting career-highs with 12 catches and 148 yards.  The rest of the team had just seven receptions combined.  Cody Mowery rushed for 86 yards on the ground, as BVU finished with 345 yards of total offense.

The Beavers had multiple opportunities to build an early lead, but couldn't come down with the big play when they needed to.

After forcing Central to go three-and-out on the opening drive of the game, Buena Vista marched all the way down to the Dutch five-yard line and elected to go for it on fourth-and-one, but Trevor Trunck's pass fell incomplete.

The Beaver defense came up big on the ensuing drive as Justin Kahl came down with his first interception of the year, giving BVU solid field position for its second drive at the Dutch 39.  It pickd up one first down but was then forced to punt.

The Dutch (3-0) led 3-0 after the first quarter following a 27-yard field goal with just over one minute left.

BVU was still within striking distance at halftime, trailing only 10-0, but the Dutch forced a fumble on the second play of the second half which led to a four-yard touchdown run and a 17-0 lead.

Kahl then forced a fumble which BVU recovered near midfield.  That drive went down to the Central 12-yard line before Central intercepted Trunck ending the threat.  Two plays later, the Dutch hauled in a 63-yard touchdown pass which ultimately put the game out of reach.

Trunck completed 16-of-34 attempts through the air for 174 yards and the one interception.  Tory Beger saw his first action of the year and completed 3-of-5 attempts while Cole Miller was 0-for-3 with an interception.

Zach Mueggenberg tallied a season-high 17 tackles while Tyler Prescott added 12.

BVU (0-3) has dropped 11 straight IIAC contests dating back to the 2014 season and will look to end that streak when it returns home next Saturday to host Simpson College at 1:00pm.
