Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team wrapped up the two-day Central College Tournament with a pair of games on Sunday, but the Beavers came up just short in both contests, losing 4-1 to William Penn before suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 setback to sixth-ranked Wash U (Mo.).
William Penn broke a scoreless game in the third inning before tacking on three key insurance runs in the sixth. BVU's only hit of the game was a one-out single by Haley Stevens in the second inning, but the Beavers stranded two runners in the inning.
The Beavers got on the board in the sixth by scoring an unearned run on fielding error, but left the tying run on base as the final two hitters struck out.
Both teams then went down in order in the seventh.
Keely Bycroft went the distance on the mound for BVU and allowed just four hits and struck out one.
The Beavers then played right with sixth-ranked Wash U in the finale in what turned out to be a nice pitcher's duel.
Wash U took a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third, and that's how things stood until a game-tying, two-out RBI double from Bycroft in the sixth. BVU threatended to take the lead in the seventh, getting a runner to second with only one out but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
After putting runners at second and third with one out in the bottom half, Wash U ended things on a fielder's choice ground ball.
Jeanne Bramhall had two hits for the Beavers, while Cheyanne Boland doubled and scored the team's lone run.
Jenna Falline (6-5) suffered the hard-luck loss, despite going the distance, allowing just six hits and striking out two.
Buena Vista is now 11-10 on the year and gets set to begin Iowa Conference play on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Coe College in a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm.
