Gibbs' Big Game Lifts BVU to DH Split with Kohawks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Ashley Gibbs doubled and drilled a three-run home run over the left center field scoreboard to help the Buena Vista softball team knock-off visiting Coe College, 7-2, and in game two and earn a doubleheader split with the Kohawks.

Both teams scored single runs in the first inning before Coe took the lead at 2-1 with a run in the third.  The Beavers got the bats going and came through with three runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead before Gibbs' three-run shot an inning later made it 7-2.

That was more than enough offense for Moriah Guyett, who appeared to get stronger as the game went on.  Despite finishing with nearly 130 pitches, she held the Kohawks scoreless over the final four frames.  She struck out eight and walked just two while improving to 8-4 on the year.

Gibss finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Cheyanne Boland and Marissa Schmidt also added two base hits and drove in one.  Five of the team's 11 hits in the contest went for extra-bases.

The Kohawks took control early of the opener by plating four runs in the first inning and never looked back.  BVU cut the lead in half in the home portion of the first when Keely Bycroft and Schmidt hit back-to-back home runs.

From there, though, Coe added five runs in the second before adding the final one in the fifth.

Gibbs also doubled, while Jeanne Bramall finished with a pair of hits.

Buena Vista is now 16-11 overall (3-1 IIAC) and in third place in the Iowa Conference standings behind both Luther and Central who are both 4-0.  The Beavers will play each of those foes yet this week, beginning with the Dutch who come to Storm Lake on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm.
