Box Score 2 A comeback bid fell short in the opener against Carthage College (Wis.) as BVU had its four-game win streak halted with a 6-4 loss, but the Beavers responded nicely in the finale by scoring a late run and edging the University of Chicago, 2-1.
Against the Lady Reds, BVU fell behind 6-0 before making a late surge. Carthage put a run on the board in the first before adding three more in the fourth and two in the sixh.
The Beavers tried to rally all the way back, but came up a few runs short. Cheyanne Boland got the scoring started with her RBI single in the seventh before Keely Bycroft blasted a three-run home run to right with only one out to make it 6-4.
After the Lady Reds made a pitching change, BVU, which had only four hits in the contest, grounded out and lined out to end the threat.
Bycroft's home run was her first of the year and fourth in her career. Her three RBI gives her 13 on the year which is only five shy of her total from all of last season. Katie Yoder walked three times and scored a run with Boland also scoring once.
Jenna Falline suffered the loss after allowing three runs in three innings. Bycroft came on in relief and worked the final four, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out three. Neither pitcher walked a batter, and six of the 10 hits were singles.
Game two was a pitcher's duel from the opening pitch with only one extra-base hit in the contest. The U of Chicago did have 10 hits in the contest, but the Beavers forced the Maroons into stranding nine base runners.
BVU scored an unearned run in the first on a throwing error by the Maroon's catcher. The Beavers held that lead until the fourth when Chicago singled home a run with two outs and stranded a runner at second.
The Maroons threatened in the fifth getting runners to second and third with two outs, but a ground out erased that opportunity. They again came through with a base hit in the sixth, but made the final out of the inning trying to go from first-to-third on the hit.
The Beavers then got a leadoff single from Bycroft to leadoff the top half of the seventh before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Marissa Schmidt. ReAnn Cappel then singled and advanced to second, while Bycroft moved up to third. Jeanne Bramhall came through with a nice bunt to score Bycroft for a 2-1 lead before Cappel was thrown out at home trying to score as well.
Falline, who came on in relief of Moriah Guyett then worked a perfect bottom half to earn her sixth win of the year. She went 2.2 innings and surrendered only two singles. Guyett scattered eight hits and was charged with the one run in 4.1 innings. She also struck out two.
Bycroft had two of the team's four hits and also stole one base. Yoder had a hit and scored the first run.
Buena Vista is now 6-2 on the spring trip and improves to 10-6 overall. It will look for a strong finish on Wednesday when it goes up against St. Thomas for the final game of the trip at 9:00am CT.
