Balanced Scoring Highlights Women's Hoops in Win over Spartans

The Buena Vista women's basketball team used a 28-8 edge in the second quarter to blow open a three-point game, and the Beavers went on to top the University of Dubuque on Wednesday night, 85-56, inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

Sidney Beckman stepped into the starting line-up for the first time this season and made 5-of-14 from downtown en route to a team-high 17 points.  Jordan Tynes followed with 16 points on 7-of-8 from the field while Jasmyn Flynn-Graves was 6-of-8 and added 14 points and nine boards.  Freshman Morgan Muhlbauer came off the bench and matched a career-best with 12 points to go along with six rebounds.

Becca Pennington was held to only seven points, but dished out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds.  Jessica Jager made both of her long range attempts and chipped in eight points.

Buena Vista, the league's top scoring team, shot 48.5 percent from the field and held a 12-1 edge in three-point buckets.  It nearly held the Spartans without a single three-point make, as they didn't make one until there was under 30 seconds to play in regulation (1-for-19).

Dubuque led 9-3 in the early going before BVU made four of its next five shots, including a three-pointer by Muhlbauer to give the Beavers their first lead at 12-11.  The two teams traded buckets over the final minutes and BVU led 22-19 after one quarter.

The Beavers then scored the first six points of the second to go up by eight before Pennington scored three straight to make it a 33-21 lead midway through the period.  Beckman then hit consecutive three's before Jager added one and the Beaver lead grew to 17 with under two minutes left in the first half.

BVU held Dubuque to only a pair of free-throws over the final two minutes, and a layup from Lacey Vokt just before the first-half buzzer gave the Beavers a comfortable 50-27 lead at the break.

Beckman made another three and added a layup, while Tynes also chipped in with a bucket, and the Beaver lead grew to 30 at 61-31 with 4:33 left in the third.  Flynn-Graves hit a three to give the team its largest lead of the night at 66-35 with 1:35 to go as BVU took a 66-38 advantage to the fourth.

Dubuque (6-14, 1-8 IIAC) tried to mount a late rally but another three from Beckman and a putback bucket from Alicia Savoy pushed the BVU lead back up to 27 with 3:23 left.  The Beavers were able to empty their bench for the seocnd half of the fourth quarter and maintained the 25-point cushion.

Buena Vista wins its third straight home contest and improves to 12-8 overall (6-3 IIAC).  It's the highest confernece win total for the team since going 6-10 in 2011-12.  It was also the first season sweep over the Spartans since 2008-09.

The Beavers will look to extend its home win streak to four when it hosts league-leading Luther College (16-4, 8-1 IIAC) at 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon.  It'll also be Alumni Day with the Beaver JV team taking on the alumni in a game at 12:00pm.
