Football Drops Season Finale at Wartburg, 42-14

Box Score

Wartburg College built a 28-0 halftime lead over Buena Vista on Saturday, and the Knights went on to top the Beavers, 42-14, in the season finale for both teams.

The Beavers got on the board late in the third quarter when quarterback Cole Miller found TJ Lint for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-7.  Miller threw his second touchdown of the contest when he and Charlie Flickinger connected from seven yards out at the start of the fourth quarter.

Miller completed 20-of-34 attempts for 160 yards and two scores, but was intercepted three times.  Senior Jalen Henningsen became the program's single-season reception record holder with his 10 receptions.  He closes his career with 76 catches, breaking Gunner Gilland's 67 mark set back in 2014.

Henningsen, however, came up just short of becoming the first player in school history to reach 3,000 career yards.  He needed 69 yards and finished with 57.

Cody Mowery, who came in averaging nearly 109.0 yards rushing per game, was held to only 58 on 15 carries.  Miller was the team's leading rusher with 68 yards on 12 rushes.

The Knights (6-4, 5-3 IIAC) went up 14-0 with a pair of first quarter touchdowns before making it a 21-0 lead with 2:00 left in the opening half.  Miller then had one of his three passes intercepted and returned 32 yards for a score just before the half to make it a 28-0 lead.

Griffin Reding tallied a team-high 12 tackles while Nick Amundson and Brady Illg each followed with 10 stops and one interception.

Buena Vista finishes the year at 3-7 overall (3-5 IIAC).  The game was also the final one in the careers of 11 seniors.
