Box Score Making his first career start under center, sophomore quarterback Cole Miller sets a school single-game record with 32 completions for 415 yards and four touchdowns, as he helped lead the Buena Vista football team to a strong 34-24 road win at Loras College on Saturday afternoon.
Miller finished 32-of-39 in the contest as BVU chalked up a season-high 545 yards of total offense. He breaks teammate Tory Beger's previous school mark of 31 completions set last year also against Loras.
Sophomore Charlie Flickinger had himself a career day as well, hauling in a career-best seven catches for 135 yards. He caught touchdown passes of nine and 62 yards from Miller with the later putting BVU in front for good with 5:53 left in the third quarter.
TJ Lint and Jalen Henningsen tied for a team-high with nine catches as Lint totaled 131 yards and one score.
Tyler Oberreuter hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass with just five minutes gone by in the fourth quarter that gave BVU its largest lead of the day at 34-17.
Cody Mowery carried the ball 30 times for 95 yards to help balance the attack as BVU held a dominating 40:30 to 19:30 advantage in time of possession.
The Duhawks struck early with a 65-yard touchdown pass in the opening minutes of the contest for a 7-0 lead.
Senior Tyler Stolen, the reigning Iowa Conference Special Teams Performer of the Week, then kicked a pair of short field goals to make it a 7-6 contest.
Loras (0-5, 0-3 IIAC) made it 10-6 with a late field goal of its own just before the half.
It was all BVU in the third quarter as it took the opening drive and went 85 yards in nine plays for its first lead of the day at 13-10.
That lead was short lived as a 32-yard touchdown pass for Loras gave the Duhawks a 17-13 edge just minutes later.
Later in the quarter after a Duhawk fumble, Miller connected with Flickinger for the 62-yard strike on the first play after the turnover, giving BVU the lead back at 20-17 with under 6:00 to go.
Lint then hauled in his 47-yard pass with under two minutes left in the quarter to extend the lead to 27-17.
After Oberreuter's score extended the margin to 34-17, Loras scored a late fourth quarter touchdown to make it a 10-point margin.
Griffin Reding and Nick Amundson each totaled 10 tackles, defensively, for BVU. Jake Staudt came up with another sack which led to the fumble and the Beaver touchdown pass.
The win snaps the team's 12-game Iowa Conference losing streak that dates back to the 2014 season.
Buena Vista is 1-4 on the year (1-2 IIAC) and will be off next week before returning home to host Luther College on October 15 for Homecoming.
