UW-Platteville Hands Beaver Football 49-13 Loss in Season Opener

Box Score

The University of Wisconsin scored 28 second-quarter points to break open a 14-6 contest against Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon, and the Pioneers went on to win 49-13 in the season opener for both teams.

After UW-P scored on the game's first possession, the Beavers marched right back down the field on their first drive, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Cody Mowery.  Senior Jalen Henningsen, playing in his first game in over a year, hauled in a 34-yard reception on the drive to help setup the score.  Tyler Stolen, however, had his PAT attempt blocked, and BVU trailed 7-6 after just six minutes of play.

The Pioneers needed just over two minutes to find the endzone on their first drive, and didn't need much more than that on their second, quickly going down the field in eigh plays and 2:46 to extend their lead to 14-6.

UW-P quarterback, Tom Kelly, then used his arm to extend the lead to 42-6 at intermission with four touchdown passes in the second quarter, including two of over 30 yards.  He finished the half, completing 21-of-25 attempts for 274 yards and five scores, and did not play in the second half.

A three-yard plunge by the Pioneers with six minutes to go in the third quarter made it 49-6 before BVU got a late two-yard touchdown run by Christian Hovery for the game's final score.

Tory Beger got the start under center for BVU and completed 11-of-23 attempts for 163 yards and one interception.  Mowery had a career-high 138 yards on 22 carries, including a late-game burst that went for 60 yards.

Henningsen chalked up a game-high 123 receiving yards on just seven catches.

Defensively, Brady Illg registered a career-best nine total tackles to help lead the way for the Beavers, followed by Justin Kahl's eight.  Kyle Arnold and Zach Mueggenberg each tallied seven, including four solo for Arnold.

UW-Platteville wracked up 491 yards of total offense with BVU adding 339.  The Beavers had all three of the game's turnovers.

Next up for Buena Vista (0-1) will be another stiff road test next Saturday afternoon when the team travels to Collegeville, Minn., for a 1:00pm kick-off against #9 St. John's University.  The Johnnies toppled the University of Dubuque today, 45-9.
