Box Score 2 The Buena Vista baseball team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day by taking a pair of games from Luther College to win the series and secure the fourth seed in next week's Iowa Conference Tournament. BVU rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener before cruising to a 14-3 (7 inn.) win in game two.
In a fast-paced opener, BVU scored the game's first run in the second when Bennett Mann tripled with the bases empty and one out before scoring one batter later on Bryce Wessels' RBI groundout.
Luther came back to take its first lead in the fourth with two runs thanks in part by the first two errors of the series by BVU.
Starter Wes Onken weathered the storm and got the Beavers out of the jam and let them rally back with two runs of their own in the sixth. Senior Eric Gurbacki drew a one-out walked and advanced to third on a single to right by junior Tanner Truesdell. Bennett Mann then singled home Gurbacki with a single to right before Bryce Wessels laced a single to left that scored Truesdell for the go-ahead run.
BVU surrendered just one hit outside of the fourth inning, and Kendall Hazel worked a perfect seventh to pick up his second win in as many days out of the bullpen. The lefty pitched 1.1 innings of hitless baseball in relief while striking out one. Onken scattered three hits and allowed just one earned run over 5.2 innings, while striking out two.
Mann went 2-for-3 at the plate for BVU with an RBI and a run scored.
The offense then exploded in the finale for the Beavers, as the team ripped out eight extra-base hits, including a pair of triples and three home runs.
After Luther took an early 3-0 lead in the first, BVU came right back with three runs of its own in the bottom half, including a two-run double by Man to left center and an RBI double from Bryce Wessels one batter later.
From there, though, it was all Buena Vista, as the Norse tallied just two more hits the rest of the way.
The Beavers took their first lead of the game in the third on a Thomas Wisecup RBI single before scoring four times in the fourth, including two-run homers off the bat of both Kolby Hilgenberg and Truesdell.
Buena Vista pulled away in the fifth with three more runs to build an 11-3 margin, getting consecutive RBI extra base hits from Neil Marshall, Hilgenberg and Gurbacki.
Marshall then capped the scoring in the sixth by launching a three-run blast over the left field fence in the sixth to make it 14-3.
Marshall went 4-for-4 in the contest with four RBI and four runs scored as the first three hitters in the BVU line-up combined to go 9-for-13 with five extra base hits and eight RBI.
Jacob Hadaway got the win and improves to 5-2 on the year. The righty went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out four and walking one. Cam Beatty finished things off by working the final two innings and working around three walks and one hit by striking out two.
With the sweep, Buena Vista improves to 25-14 on the year and wraps up league play at 15-13. It also secures the team the fourth seed in the conference tournament which begins on Thursday, May 7 in Cedar Rapids. BVU will face the Norse again, as they end up as the fifth seed. Thursday's game will be played at Daniels Park on the campus of Coe College and begin at 1:00pm.
The winner of that contest will then advance to play top-seed Wartburg College (30-10, 20-8 IIAC) inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7:00pm. The loser will play the first elimination game of the tournament on Saturday morning at 10:00am.
