Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team had to wait a couple extra days for its Iowa Conference doubleheader with Wartburg College, but it proved to be worth the wait as the Beavers rolled to a pair of wins over the Knights by scores of 14-6 (6 inn.) and 9-3, respectively.
The Knights tallied three runs in each of the first two innings of game one, including a pair of home runs, but that was about as much offense as they chalked up for most of the day. BVU responded with a game-tying four runs in its half of the third, highlighted by a big two-run double from Lesa Turnquist, one of her three in the game.
Jordon Pilcher registered an RBI single in the fifth, followed by a two-run double from Marissa Schmidt to make it an 11-6 lead. BVU ended things in the sixth with three more runs, including a big two-run home run by sophomore Cheyanne Boland over the right field fence.
Turnquist finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Schmidt and Boland, along with Katie Yoder, tallied two hits, as the Beavers held a 12-5 advantage.
Keely Bycroft got the start and went just 1.2 innings, allowing all six runs on five hits. Jenna Falline then came on in relief and pitched a stellar 4.1 innings, striking out three and walking two.
BVU carried that momentum into the start of game two, erupting four five first-inning runs to take a 5-0 lead.
That's the way the score stood until Boland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to make it 6-0.
Wartburg (19-16, 0-10 IIAC) got a big two-out, three-run double in the sixth to cut the deficit in half, but BVU was just too much on this night, getting a two-run triple by Bramhall in the home half, followed by a run-scoring double by Yoder to make it 6-3.
Bramhall, who entered the day leading the IIAC in batting avergae, had a big game at 2-for-3 with a walk, to go along with three RBI and three runs scored. Yoder also had two hits and a pair of RBI with Bycroft chiming in with two base knocks.
Falline got the start and went four scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out one. Moriah Guyett came on and worked the final three frames to earn her first save of the year.
Buena Vista has now won six straight meetings with the Knights and improve to 15-14-1 on the year (6-4 IIAC). The team takes over sole possession of third place in the conference standings and looks to keep adding to that win total again on Tuesday when it travels to fourth-ranked Luther College for two more games, starting at 3:00pm.
