Softball Finishes Spring Trip at 3-3 Following Friday's Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista softball team picked up its 10th win of the year with an 8-2 finish to begin the day on Friday against Colby College before seeing its comeback bid fall just short in an 8-6 loss to the University of Chicago in game two.  The split wraps up the team's spring trip to Clermont, Fla., with a 3-3 record.

Colby took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning before BVU stormed right back in the bottom half for three runs, thanks in part to some defensive miscues.  A pair of runs scored on an errant throw on a fielder's choice by Stephanie Hayden before Marissa Schmidt drove in Jordon Pilcher with an RBI single.

The Beavers added to their lead in the fifth with five more runs.  Pilcher put down a bunt which led to an erro and plated two more runs before Schmidt doubled her home one batter later.  A double steal by Keely Bycroft and Lacey Vokt made it a 7-2 game before Cheyanne Boland singled home the team's final run.

Colby did push across a run in the seventh but it was not enough.

Schmidt again turned in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Bycroft also added two hits and scored a run while Hayden and Pilcher scored two runs each.

Jenna Falline scattered seven hits while pitching the complete game and improving to 4-4 on the year.  Only one of the runs was earned, and she also struck out one.

Chicago used a seven-run fourth inning to build an 8-0 lead before BVU began to slowly chip away.  The team got on the board in the home half of the fourth on a passed ball before Hayden made it 8-2 in the fifth with an RBI double.

Katie Yoder began the rally in the sixth with an RBI bunt single before the Beavers were able to take advantage of a wild pitch and passed ball to make it 8-5.  Boland stole home to make it 8-6, but BVU stranded the tying runs on base.

After shutting Chicago down in the seventh, the Beavers got a lead-off walk in the bottom half but then struck out three straight times to end the comeback.

Boland went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for BVU, while Bycroft also tallied two hits and scored once.

Moriah Guyett suffered the loss on the mound after allowing eight runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings.  Bycroft came on and worked 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up only three hits.

Buena Vista goes 3-3 on the trip and moves to 10-10 overall.  The team will now gear up for the start of Iowa Conference play on Tuesday, March 31 when it travels to Coe College for a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm.
