Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team was finally able to get its spring break schedule underway on Wednesday morning down in Clermont, Fla., and the Beavers bounced back from an 8-4 loss in their opener against Elmhurst to win a 2-1 thriller over Carthage.
After having Tuesday's games cancelled due to the team being grounded in Chicago on Monday due to inclement weather conditions, the Beavers took the diamond on Wednesday looking to get off to a strong start.
The Beavers held a 3-2 lead through three innings against Elmhurst, but saw that lead go away after the Bluejays tallied three runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead and added three more insurance runs in the seventh.
Senior Jordon Pilcher got BVU on the board with an RBI single before Jeanne Bramhall gave the team its first lead with an RBI groundout.
After Elmhurst tied the game in the second, senior Stephanie Hayden quickly gave the Beavers the advantage back in the bottom half, driving in Cheyanne Boland with an RBI single.
Hayden, who finished with a team-high two hits, scored BVU's final run in the seventh on Marissa Schmidt's run-scoring single.
The Bluejays (7-2) held a 13-8 advantage in base hits while BVU also committed three errors, defensively.
Jenna Falline (3-3) went the distance on the mound for Buena Vista and was charged with only five earned runs while striking out four.
The Beavers then held off a late rally by Carthage to earn the split. Schmidt, who was on base three times in the opener, drove home the team's first run in the first inning with an RBI groundout.
That's the way things stood until the sixth when Bramhall bunted home a run to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
Elmhurst then loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but managed just an RBI single before Moriah Guyett got a fly out to end the game. She scatterd six hits in the game and struck out six.
The two teams combined for only 10 hits with Cortney Weaver turning in two for the Beavers, including a triple. Hayden also tripled to lead off the game.
The win moves BVU to 8-8 on the year, and the team will look to add to that win total on Thursday when it plays two more games beginning with #14 UW-Whitewater at 10:00am ET.
