Home Runs Hurt Beavers during Opening Day Sweep by #13 St. Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista softball team looked to get its 2015 season off to a fast start on Friday morning inside of the Rosemount Dome with a doubleheader against #13 St. Thomas (Minn.), but the Tommies hit four 2-run home runs on the day to sweep past BVU, 5-2 and 8-0 (6 inn.).

The Beavers looked to be in position to take the opener from the Tommies as they held a 2-1 lead going to the bottom half of the sixth.  That's when St. Thomas scored the game's final four runs, powered by a two-run shot for the final scoring.

The Tommies tied things up with a one-out double before taking the lead back at 3-2 when a run later scored on a throwing error to third on a stolen base attempt.

Buena Vista, which fell behind 1-0, rallied back with a pair of unearned runs in the third.  Cortney Weaver got the team's first hit, as well as the first of her career, when she lofted a ball into right field that got lost in the roofing and dropped down for a double.  She then came around to score when Stephanie Hayden reached on a throwing error by the catcher after a dropped third strike.

Senior Jordon Pilcher, who went 2-for-4 in the contest, put BVU on top with an RBI single to right.

Junior Jenna Falline settled down after the first inning jam and would pitch 5.1 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits, while striking out six and walking three.  Freshman Keely Bycroft, who started the game as the designated player, made her collegiate debut on the mound in the sixth and allowed the two-run home run, while also walking one.

At the plate, Bycrot also added her first career hit and tallied a sacrifice, while senior Lesa Turnquist added the final hit for BVU.

St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead of game two in the first inning before adding two-run home runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to build a 7-0 lead.  It then added a run in the sixth for the game's final margin.

Buena Vista had its best chance to score in the first when it loaded the bases with only one out but was unable to push a run across.

The Beavers (0-2) will look to bounce back on Saturday when it returns to the Dome to play a doubleheader against Hamline University.  First pitch of game one is slated for 9:00am.
