Box Score The Buena Vista football team couldn't overcome four second-quarter turnovers which led to 21 Simpson College points, and the Storm went on to hand the Beavers a lopsided 43-13 loss inside of Buxton Stadium to begin Iowa Conference play on Saturday.
The Storm took the game's opening possession and went 62 yards in nine plays to score on a seven-yard touchdown pass only five minutes into the game and take the early 7-0 lead.
After the team's traded punts, BVU looked poised to tie things up early in the second quarter, despite starting the drive at its own four yard-line. The Beavers went 80 yards in 13 plays, but came up short on fourth down from the Simpson six on a fake field goal attempt.
From there, things went downhill for the Beavers, as they would turn the ball over on four straight possessions (two fumbles and two interceptions). The Storm were able to take advantage of three of them, scoring three touchdowns over a five-minute span and build a 28-0 halftime lead. That deficit could have been more, but Simpson missed wide left on a 39-yard field goal attempts with just seconds left before the break after BVU's fourth turnover.
BVU came out to begin the second half with its best drive of the game, marching 90 yards down the field in 14 plays and getting a 13-yard touchdown run from Beger on a fourth-and-10 from the Simpson 13.
That's the way things stood until the start of the fourth when Drew Jensen converted his 40-yard field goal attempt to make it a 31-7 advantage.
BVU cut its deficit down to 31-13 after its ensuing drive went 78 yards in 12 plays, capped by a two-yard touchdown pass to the back of the endzone from Beger to sophomore Tyler Obberreuter with 9:00 left in regulation.
Simpson would recover the onside kick attempt by the Beavers, but would later be forced to punt. The kick was downed at the BVU 8-yard line, and on 3rd-and-15 from the BVU 3, Beger was sacked for a safety to make it 33-13.
Using a short field after the free-kick, Simpson got a big 35-yard burst from tailback Jordan Beem, who totaled 184 yards on the day, to set up another Jensen field goal that made it 36-13 with 4:09 left.
BVU would be forced to turn it over on downs, and with under 2:00 left, Simpson found the endzone for the game's final score - a 40-yard run from Beem.
Simpson totaled 366 yards of total offense in the contest and averaged nearly seven yards per play. The Storm outgained BVU 205-93 on the ground, despite being outgained by nearly 60 yards through the air.
Cody Mowery, the reigning Offensive Player of the Week, was held to 75 yards rushing on 23 carries to help lead the ground attack. Beger passed for a career-high 217 yards while completing 19-of-34 attempts. Jalen Henningsen went over 100 yards for the third time this season, hauling in a game-high eight catches for 132 yards, including a long of 54 yards.
Brady Illg was the team's leading tackler with 10, including seven solo, with Connor Ulven and Kyle Arnold right behind at eight.
Beem carried the ball 19 times for the 184 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Storm (2-2, 1-0 IIAC) offensively. Quarterback Caleb Frye completed 15-of-20 attempts through the air for 161 yards and three scores.
Beem was also the team's leading receiver with three grabs for 54 yards and one score.
The loss snaps BVU's three-game win streak in the series, as the team falls to 1-3 overall this season (0-1 IIAC). It will return home next Saturday, October 10, for a Homecoming game inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium against Loras College (2-2, 0-1 IIAC).
