Men's Soccer Plays to a Draw in a Weather-Shortened Match with Hamline

Box Score

The Buena Vista men's soccer team finished its opening weekend unbeaten following Sunday evening's weather-shortened 0-0 match against visiting Hamline University (1-0-1).

In a match that was delayed at the start by 40 minutes, the end of it was later cut short because of sever weather moving through the area.  A delay was forced with under 14 minutes left in the match because of lightning detected in the area and after a 2-hour plus delay was already in store, the two teams agreed not to continue.

Neither team was able to get many shots off in the contest as both defenses were playing effectively.  The Pipers outshot BVU, 5-4, in the opening half before holding a 6-0 advantage in the second.  However, the two teams combined for only four shots-on-goal.

BVU thought it had broke a scoreless match early in the first half on a free-kick attempt after a Hamline yellow card.  A nice feed into the center of the pack and later headed into the back of the net was erased when the Beavers were called for offsides.

That was about as close as either team came to scoring in the contest.

Four different players turned in one shot each for the Beavers with three going on-goal.  Defensively, senior Jordan Balster was strong defending the net, saving the only shot-on-goal for the Pipers in the contest.

Buena Vista sits at 1-0-1 on the year and is set to return to the field on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference match at Martin Luther College.  Start time is set for 4:00pm.  The two teams met in last year's season-opener with BVU earning the 4-0 shutout.
