Baseball Sets School Record for Wins as it Advances to Tournament Championship

Box Score

Buena Vista scored five times over the first two innings and that was more than enough for junior Scott Harris, as the Beavers went on to top the Dutch 7-2 and advance into Saturday's championship game of the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament.

The Dutch threatened in the top of the first with back-to-back singles, but a double-play line-out to second proved big in the inning, as junior Scott Harris got a fly out to end the inning and keep Central off the board.

BVU wasted no time in this contest getting the offense going, answering with four runs in the bottom half of the inning - all with two outs.

Brandon Wessels singled with one out and Joe Paletta was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.  After a fielder's choice at third base for the second out, Jeremy Lambert came through with a big two-out RBI single to left before Tanner Truesdell followed with a two-run triple past a diving right fielder.  Bryce Wessels then reached on an error by the second baseman to make it 4-0.

Senior Nick Schlecht doubled down the right field line on a 1-1 pitch to start the second and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Weston Foxx.  It was Foxx's sixth sacrifice fly of the year, tying a school record. BVU had the bases loaded in the inning, but settled for just the one run.

Harris was cruising until the fourth when Central got on the board.  After back-to-back singles to start the inning, the Dutch got a one-out RBI single to center before the hard-throwing lefty recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame and keep the score at 5-1.

Brandon Wessels pushed the Beaver lead to 7-1 in the bottom half with a 2-run blast over the 378' mark in left center field. The home run is his team-leading fifth of the year.

Central got one back in the fifth to make it a 7-2 game, but Harris was on top of his game from there, sitting the Dutch down in order in the next three innings before working around a two-out single and a hit-by-pitch in the ninth for his second complete-game of the year.

Both Wessels, along with Neil Marshall and Tanner Truesdell finished with two hits each, as Brandon Wessels and Truesdell each drove in two.  Brandon Wessels moves within five hits of matching the program's single-season mark of 71.  As a team, the Beavers out-hit the Dutch, 11-7 and held them to only one extra-base hit.

Harris struck out eight and walked none while throwing only 104 pitches.  He improves to 8-0 on the year and is now tied for third on the program's single-season wins list.  He now has 79 strikeouts on the year, moving him into sixth.

Buena Vista improves to 35-7 on the year and sets a new school record for wins in a season.  It surpasses the 34 wins set back in 2011 - the same year that BVU also advanced into the College World Series.

The win pushes BVU into Saturday's championship game.  The Beavers will have to wait until after the 10:00am game on Saturday to know who their opponent will be.  Game time is set for 1:00pm.
