Box Score 2 Trailing 4-2 heading to the seventh inning, the Buena Vista softball team plated five runs, including a key 3-run double from Jessica Stocker, to help left the team to a 7-4 upset victory over 13th-ranked and No. 3 seed Central College to begin the Iowa Conference Tournament.
The Dutch put together a two-out rally in the first and got back-to-back home runs to take an early 3-0 lead.
BVU got one back in third on an RBI single from Jordon Pilcher to make it a 3-1 contest. The Dutch then pushed the margin back to three with a run in the bottom half.
Sam Engleman belted her seventh home run of the year in the sixth to get BVU within 4-2 before the dramatic rally an inning later.
Lacey Vokt and Brooke Berkey got the scoring started for BVU with RBI singles to even things up at 4-4 before Stocker hit a laser to the gap in left to clear the bases and give the Beavers a 7-4 cushion.
Jenna Falline then retired the Dutch in order in the bottom half to give BVU its first win in the tournament since it got started back up in 2006.
Vokt was the only player with multiple hits for BVU, as she went 2-for-3 with the RBI and run scored. Engleman also walked twice and scored a pair of runs. The Beavers finished with seven hits and were held without an extra-base knock until the final two innings.
Falline scattered four hits in the contest and struck out five.
The Beavers weren't done with their comeback bids on the day. The team came all the way back from a 4-0 deficit later in the day against second-seed Luther to tie the game at 4-4 when Lesa Turnquist singled home a run in the seventh. In the sixth inning, she put BVU on the board with an RBI single which was later followed up by a two-run single by Mikaela Millslage.
The game went into extra innings where the Norse prevailed in the eighth with a walk-off solo home run to lead off the frame.
Sam Engleman went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to help lead the Beavers at the plate. Stephanie Hayden added one hit and walked twice. BVU tallied eight hits in the contest.
Brittney Kubik suffered the loss in relief after taking over for starter Jenna Falline in the fifth inning. She was charged with two runs on five hits. Falline allowed three runs on three hits and walked on in her four innings.
BVU (14-20) returns to action on Saturday at 2:00pm and will face fifth-seed Dubuque, which eliminated third-seed Central earlier Saturday morning.
