Box Score 2 The Buena Vista baseball team used a balanced offensive attack to help lift it to a commanding 10-2 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader against Central College before using a ninth-inning rally in game two to pick up a 5-4 triumph and complete the sweep of the Dutch.
In the nightcap, BVU trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom half of the ninth before the drama began to unfold. Pinch hitter Alex Brown got things started when he lined a lead-off single to center. Ryan Duncan came on to pinch run for him and would advance to second when Nick Schlect put down a sacrifice bunt on a 3-2 count.
Neil Marshall hit a sharp grounder to first which was fielded nicely by the first baseman, but advanced Duncan to third. Brandon Wessels then hit a chopper towards third which was fielded and thrown over to first, but the throw was dropped, allowing Wessels to reach and the tying run to score.
After Wessels moved up to second on a wild pitch, the Dutch intentionally walked Joe Paletta, setting the stage for Tanner Truesdell's game-winning walk of hit into the left centerfield gap, which scored Wessels.
Wessels finished with two of the team's seven hits and scored two of the five runs. Truesdell finished with only the one hit, but did drive in two. Senior Jeremy Lambert blasted his first home run of the season early in the game and drove in two.
Scott Harris got the start and pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking three. Cam Beatty came on in relief and worked the next two innings, allowing just one hit, walking two and striking out two. Lucas Hadaway pitched the final 0.2 innings and picked up the win to improve his record to 3-0 on the year.
It was all BVU in the opener, as the Beavers plate four runs in the second and five more in the third. That was more than enough for senior Jon Ringblom, who went on to pick up his third win of the year. He has yet to surrender more than two runs in any of his five starts this season.
Freshman Bryce Wessels drove home the game's first runs when he hit a two-run, bases loaded double for a 2-0 BVU lead. Devon Harms drove in a run on a safety squeeze before Marshall doubled to drive home the final run.
After the Dutch got a run in the top half of the third to make it 5-1, Paletta led off the home half of the inning with his second home run of the year. Bryce Wessels again doubled to left center to drive in two more runs, while Titman also doubled to drive home a run. Paletta drove home his second run of the inning when he drew a bases loaded walk.
Central made it 9-2 in the fourth, but BVU quickly got that run back in the bottom half to make it a 10-2 contest.
The Dutch stranded two runners in the fifth and one more in the sixth before Ringblom retired the side in order in the seventh, including a strikeout to end it.
Bryce Wessels finished 2-for-4 with the four RBI and two runs scored to help lead the Beavers at the plate. Weston Foxx also had two hits and scored twice, while Marshall turned in two hits and drove in one.
Ringblom scattered seven hits and picked up his second straight complete games. He struck out seven and walked only one, lowering his ERA to 1.54.
The win moves BVU to 16-4 overall (5-3 IIAC), and the Beavers will now look to win the four-game series on Monday evening when they face the Dutch in a doubleheader starting at 3:30pm.
