Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team returned to action again on Thursday following its one off day, and the team began its day with a 6-0 shutout against Lawrence University before seeing Calvin score three late runs en route to an 8-1 victory.
In the win over the Vikings, BVU jumped out to the 4-0 lead after just one-half inning. Stephanie Hayden scored the first run of the game on a double steal with runners at the corners and one out. Jessica Stocker then followed with an RBI double before Sam Engleman tripled her home. Lesa Turnquist capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Hayden then doubled home a run in the second for the Beavers before Engleman later singled her home for the 6-0 lead.
Both teams then shut the other down for the rest of the game, as BVU held the Vikings to only four hits.
Hayden went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored to help lead the offensive attack. Engleman also tallied three hits and two RBI while scoring once. Pilcher chipped in with two hits and a run scored.
Jenna Falline picked up the win on the mound as she went the distance, allowing just the four hits and working around four walks.
In the nightcap, the Beavers were held to just four hits, offensively. Engleman turned in two of those and scored the team's only run. Cheyanne Boland drove in the team's only run of the game in the second inning.
Britney Kubik suffered the loss for BVU, going 6.1 innings and allowing all eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits, while striking out two and walking one. Falline came on to get the final two outs of the seventh and walked one.
Buena Vista is now 4-4 on the trip and 6-10 overall this season. The team will wrap up play in Florida on Friday with games against Thomas (ME) and Colby. Game times are set for 10:00am and 12:00pm CT.
