Box Score The Buena Vista women's basketball team cut a 13-point deficit down to 95-92 with under 30 seconds to play, but it was Coe College which made a pair of clutch free-throws with 23 seconds left to hang on for a 97-92 victory over the Beavers on Wednesday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
Senior Malarie Gilley turned in 22 points and nine rebounds to help lead the Beavers with Lexi Fisher next with 15 points, four assists and two steals. Shelby Wiederhoeft and Susan Kies each chipped in with 12 points with Wiederhoeft also adding six rebounds and Kies five assists.
Lacey Vokt dished flirted with a triple-double, scoring nine points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out a game-high seven assists.
As a team, the Beavers connected on nearly 49 percent of their attempts from the field in the second half and finished the game at 43.2 percent. They also made 8-of-19 from downtown and also went 21-of-29 at the free-throw line.
The first-half was back-and-forth from the opening tip with neither team able to build much of a lead. BVU led 40-39 with 1:40 to play, but the Kohawks scored the final four points to take a 43-40 lead into the break.
Coe built a 55-50 lead five minutes into the second half before the Beavers got a jumper from Jade Vlotho and a three-pointer from Fisher to pull back even and forcing a Kohawk timeout.
It was at that point when Coe went on a pivotal 11-0 run out of the timeout to take a 66-55 lead with 12:02 left.
Fisher made another long range shot, followed by a jumper from Wiederhoeft to make it a 68-62 game with 10:50 to play. After a three from Coe to make it a 71-62 advantage, Vlotho hit a jumper before Vokt later drilled her only three-pointer of the contest, and Gilley made two free-throws to get the Beavers within 73-70 with 8:52 left.
The Kohawks quickly pushed it back up to 10 just one minute later and built their largest lead at 89-76 at the 5:00 mark. They continued to lead by 12 with 3:21 left before the Beavers made one last charge.
Kies then hit one of her two three's on the night to help spark an 8-0 run to make it a 94-90 game. After Coe made 1-of-2 at the line to make it a five-point game, Sidney Beckman came back down and made a pair at the line to get BVU as close as 95-92.
The Kohawks (11-9, 6-3 IIAC), however, sealed it at the free-throw line with a pair of free-throws on their next trip down for the game's final score.
Buena Vista had its three-game win streak snapped with the loss and are now 9-11 overall (3-6 IIAC). The team looks to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when it goes for the season sweep of Luther College. Tip-off of that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm
