Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team opened its season on Friday morning against #11 St. Thomas, and the Beavers just couldn't quite string enough hits together to score enough runs, as the Tommies win the opener 8-1 before taking game two, 6-2.
The Tommies used a four-run sixth inning of the opener to break open a 4-1 contest. BVU, which was out-hit 14-5 in the contest, go on the board in the fourth inning when Sam Knudsen belted a run-scoring double, driving home Jordan Pilcher, who singled and stole second with two outs.
St. Thomas took the early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first inning and then after BVU scored its run, the Tommies answered right back with two more in the bottom half.
Aside from Knudsen, Sam Engleman and Stephanie Hayden also doubled for BVU.
Jenna Falline suffered the loss on the mound while going the distance. She finished with two strikeouts and two walks as all eight runs were earned.
St. Thomas built a 6-0 lead in game two with two runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth. The final three runs came via a pair of long balls.
Englemen continued to show her power, as she blasted a two-run homer of her own in the sixth to get BVU on the board. The Beavers then looked to rally in the seventh, getting the tying run to the on-deck circle with no outs, but the Tommies would turn a double-play to deflate the momentum.
Pilcher also added another hit in the game, as did Jessica Stocker, Mikaela Millslagle, and Haley Stevens.
Britney Kubik pitched the complete game on the mound for the Beavers. She scattered eight hits and allowed six earned runs, while walking three.
Buena Vista (0-2) will look to get into the win column on Saturday when it takes on Bethel University in a doubleheader inside of the Rosemount Dome. Game one is scheduled to get underway at 9:30am.
