Box Score The Buena Vista football team scored the game's first points on a five-yard quarterback draw by senior Bobby Brown, but Coe College would go on to score 33 unanswered points to hand the Beavers a tough 33-13 loss in the season final for both teams.
After Coe fumbled the ball near midfield on the game's opening drive, Brown put BVU on the board with his five-yard surge right up the middle of the field, to cap a 10-play, 43-yard drive. The PAT was blocked, leaving the game at 6-0.
The Kohawks hand an answer on the ensuing drive, marching 68 yards in 11 plays, before getting a 26-yard field goal with 4:55 left in the opening quarter to make it a 6-3 game after one quarter.
Coe, however, took the lead for good on the first play of the second stanza when quarterback Josh Rekers threw a 31-yard touchdown pass, giving Coe a 13-7 lead.
BVU struggled to find an offensive ryhthm after that first drive, settling for a net of just 62 yards of total offense the rest of the half, while punting the ball away twice, having one pass intercepted and turning it over on downs.
The Kohawks capitalized on two of those stops, getting two more field goals in the quarter to take a 16-6 halftime lead.
The Beavers were forced to punt on the opening drive of the second half before Coe marched down the field for its fourth field goal of the game to make it 19-6 with 8:42 left. After the Kohawks intercepted Brown for the second time in the contest on the next drive, they answered with a touchdown on the ensuing drive to break open a 26-6 game with under three minutes left in the third.
Rekers' third touchdown pass of the game early in the fourth quarter made it a 33-6 contest before Brown hooked up with fellow senior Gunner Gilland from 20 yards out with only 3:53 left for the game's final score.
Brown finished the game with 204 yards passing and the one TD to wrap up an historic season and put the finishing touches on a record-breaking career. Gilland, meanwhile, hauled in his 15th touchdown of the season and ended the year with at least one TD catch in all seven Iowa Conference games.
Junior Ben Seitz led BVU with nine catches for 86 yards. Senior Adam Cave hauled in five catches for 59 yards and ends his career as the program's all-time pass catcher with 133. He surpassed Jesse Schmidt's previous mark of 132 with his last grab.
On the ground, senior Dylan Barrett carried the ball 18 times for 70 yards and wraps up his stellar season and career with 1,242 yards rushing this season and 2,576 for his career. That total moved him into third place on the all-time rushing list.
Defensively, Austin Gibbs turned in a game-high 11 tackles, including eight solo, while also breaking up one pass. Zach Mueggenburg was next at nine tackles, while Kyle Arnold chipped in with eight.
Both teams wrap up the season at 5-5 overall (4-3 IIAC). The game was also the final one for 14 BVU seniors, who helped lead the team to top-three conference finishes in each of the last three years.
