Women's Basketball Rolls Past Martin Luther 105-66 in Season Opener

Box Score

The Buena Vista women's basketball team did something on Saturday that no other team in program history has done as the Beavers used the hot shooting touch to roll past Martin Luther College, 105-66, to begin the Gustavus Adolphus Classic.

The 105 points marked the first time ever that a BVU team has reached triple digits in a season opener in program history.  BVU had not reached the century mark against the Knights since a 115-44 triumph in Storm Lake back in 1996-97.

Junior Lexi Fisher helped lead the way for the Beavers by connecting on 6-of-8 three-point attempts to post a game-high 24 points.  Sophomore Sidney Beckman came off the bench to add a career-high 21, while making 3-of-8 long range attempts.  Senior Becca Pennington, in her first game in nearly a year, followed with 14 points and a team-high five assits, as fellow senior Shelby Wiederhoeft chalked up 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting.  Junior Lacey Vokt was the final Beaver in double figures, turning in 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench to go along with a team-best eight rebounds.  Sophomore Nicole Snyder was right behind on the glass with seven boards.

As a team, BVU drilled 15 three-point buckets in the contest and shot a blistering 50.6 from the field overall.  Defensively, the Beavers also went plus-14 on the glass (55-41) and scored 27 points off turnovers.

After a three-pointer by Fisher to begin the game, the Knights answered with eight straight points only to see BVU come right back with three straight three-point buckets (two by Vokt) to reclaim a 12-8 lead.

Martin Luther tied it at 12-12 before an 11-2 BVU run over the next three minutes made it a 23-14 contest.  Fisher made it a 10-point game at 29-19 with a long range bucket midway through the half and BVU never looked back from there.

Martin Luther did get as close as five (37-32) with 3:17 left in the first half, but the Beavers closed the opening period on a 15-7 run to take a 54-40 lead into the locker room.

The two team's traded buckets to begin the second half, but BVU put the game out of reach with a 13-0 spurt over the next six minutes to build a 67-41 advantage.

Freshman Jasmine Demers drilled a three-pointer to make it 70-43 with nearly seven minutes gone by in the half.  The lead grew to 30 when Fisher connected from downtown as BVU later hit the century mark when Beckman made one of her three triples with 2:10 to play.

Buena Vista (1-0) is back in action to wrap up its play at the Classic on Sunday afternoon when it faces Crown College at 1:00pm.  Crown (0-1) fell to the host Gusties, 81-31, in Saturday's other match-up.
