Beavers Hang Tough but Fall at #11 UW-P, 42-17

Box Score

The Buena Vista football team got a late first half touchdown to get within 28-17 at the half, but the Beavers couldn't add to that total in the second half as #11 UW-P scored twice more to top BVU, 42-17.

UW-P jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead early in the first quarter before BVU settled down and put together a nice 11-play, 75-yard drive which was capped by a Bobby Brown touchdown pass to junior Gunner Gilland from five yards out.

Junior Ryan Anderson later intercepted a pass at the Pioneer 32 which helped set up Tyler Stolen's 24-yard field goal to get the Beavers within 14-10 early in the second quarter.

The Pioneers then added back-to-back touchdown drives on their next two possessions to push the margin to 28-10 before the Beaver defense helped set up a late first half score.  Senior Brady Randall forced a UW-P fumble at the BVU 23 before Matt Best scooped it up and ran 52 yards the other way down to the Pioneer 25.  Three plays later Brown connected with Adam Cave from 14 yards out to make it a 28-17 contest at the half.

UW-P, which chalked up 273 yards on the ground and over 500 overall, used the rushing attack in the second half and added a touchdown in each quarter to secure the win.

BVU marched down the field on the game's final drive and got as close as the UW-P eight yard line before a tipped pass was intercepted at the goal line to end the game.

BVU, which was held to only 168 yards of total offense in last year's match-up, finished today's game with 242, including 164 through the air.

Brown completed 14 of his 27 attempts for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while being intercepted just once.  He also rushed four times for 15 yards.

Tight end Adam Cave hauled in six catches for a career-high 67 yards and the one TD with seven diferent players picking up at least one.

Dylan Barrett rushed 15 times for 38 yards as the Beavers were held to only 78 overall.

Defensively, sophomore Kyle Arnold recorded a career-high 14 total tackles with Randall next at eight.

Stolen had a strong debut in the kicking game, converting his only field goal attempt and also recording a 56-yard punt.  For the game, he averaged 39 yards on five punts.  Mason Nielsen and Ben Sietz combined for an average of 21 yards on four kick-off returns.

BVU was penalized only twice in the game, compared to eight for the Pioneers.  The Beavers, however, turned the ball over three times with UW-P only having two.

Buena Vista is 0-1 on the year and looks to get into the win column when the team hosts Concordia-Moorhead next Saturday, September 14.  The game is part of the annual BVU Athletics Hall of Fame Day with kick-off scheduled at 1:00pm
