Men's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker to Illinois College

Box Score

The Buena Vista men's soccer team played a man down nearly the entire second half and managed to take a slim 2-1 lead with less than five minutes to play, but Illinois College went on to score twice in the span of a minute to take a 3-2 lead with under two minutes to play, and hand the Beavers a tough loss in the final game of the BVU Classic.

BVU got on the board first when Kwame Antwi found Alex Chavez, who then dished it off to Joey Stivers, and he lined it right into the back of the net with nearly 12 minutes gone by in the contest.

That proved to be the game's only goal until the Blueboys evened things up midway through the second half.

Playing a man down since the 51:30 mark, the Beavers held their ground and looked to be in position for their second straight victory of the year when senior Tyler Lafferty gave the team a 2-1 lead off a nice feed from Tyler Smaha with just under five minutes to go.

Illinois College, who outshot BVU, 23-3 in the second half tied things up at 2-2 in the 87th minute before taking the lead for the first time just a minute later.

Stivers finished the match with a team-high four shots, including three on-goal.

Junior Jordan Balster took the hard-luck loss despite picking up nine saves.

Buena Vista is 1-1 on the year and looks to bounce back on September 4 when the team travels to Nebraska Wesleyan for the first road contest of the year.  The match will be played under the lights beginning at 8:00pm.
