Box Score The Buena Vista men's soccer team gets its 2013 season underway by hosting Martin Luther College on Friday, August 30 on the first day of the annual BVU Classic.
The Beavers are coming off a 5-11-1 campaign from a year ago, but have a strong nucleus of experienced players back, coupled with a handful of newcomers who look to make an impact in 2013.
Joey Stivers, an Honorable Mention All-Iowa Conference selection, is returns after finishing second on the team with five goals a year ago. Senior Tyler Lafferty posted a team-leading seven goals, while also dishing out four assists. Juan Flores Andrade is also back after tying for the team lead with five assists. That trio proved to be three of the team's top-four point scorers in 2012.
Defensively, the team will focus on cutting down on the number of goals allowed. It will have its corps of defenders back across the field and will turn to junior Jordan Balster, as well as freshman Matt Tennyson to handle the duties in-goal.
Friday's match against Martin Luther is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm on Peterson Field inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium. The Beavers will close out the Classic by taking on Illinois College on Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm.
The team is then on the road for four straight matches before closing out the bulk of its non-conference schedule to start the year with a pair of home contests.
Iowa Conference play gets underway for the team on September 28 at Luther College. The first home league contest is against Wartburg College on October 2. The regular season wraps up on October 29 with a match at Coe College.
