Biography

About Derek: Is the son of Dave and Tammy...has two brothers, Bryan and Todd, as well as one sister, Taylor. His father played football for BVU, as did his two older brothers.

High School Highlights: He earned three varsity letters for the Cyclones and was a First Team All-District and Third Team All-State selection as a senior. In addition, he was a four-year letterwinner in baseball and was a two-time Second Team All-Conference selection, as well as a two-time All-District performer. He also started on the State Runner-Up team as a senior. Lettered twice in both basketball and track. Aside from athletics, he was listed on the Honor Roll throughout his career, was an Academic All-Conference, All-District and All-State selection and was a member of the National Honor Society.

College Highlights:
2014: Derek finished third on the team in total tackles with 60.  He was one of five players to register at least 30 solo stops on the year and was also among the leaders with five tackles for a loss.  In addition, he was tied for the team lead in interceptions with two and was third with four pass breakups.  Following the year, he was also named to the Academic All-IIAC Team for the third straight year.
2013: Played in all 10 games for the Beavers and ranked fifth on the team with 60 tackles.  He also had one of the team''s eight interceptions.  He turned in a season-high 11 strops against nationally-ranked Bethel University in Week 3. Following the year, he was selected to the Academic All-IIAC Team for the second straight year.

2012
: He again finished seventh on the team in tackles (47) and was fourth with 7.5 for a loss.  He also tied for second with three sacks and had one quarterback hit.  Following the year, he was named to the Academic All-IIAC Team in his first year of eligibility.  He closed the season with a career-high 10 stops against the University of Dubuque and had a career-best 3.5 tackles for a loss against Wartburg.

2011: Finished his first collegiate season ranked seventh on the team in total tackles. He turned in back-to-back eight tackle contests, including one against Wartburg where he also intercepted his first career pass.
