ROCHESTER, Minn. (March 1, 2026) - The Buena Vista softball team was right back in action Sunday morning following a late night of games on Saturday, and the Beavers came up just short in a pair of non-conference games, losing 10-4 against Macalester and then edged 6-5 in the finale by UW-Stout.

The Scots (2-3) were clinging to a 5-3 lead going to the sixth inning before they added a pair of runs in the top of the frame to go along with three more in the seventh to pull away late. 

Freshman Hanna Merron tied the game at 2-2 for the Beavers in the bottom of the second inning when she reached on an error by the left fielder that plated two runs. After the Scots belted one of their two home runs of the game in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2, sophomore Jordan Fabirkiewicz got one of those runs back for the Beavers in the home half with an RBI single and nearly drove in two but the second run was thrown out at the plate.

BVU was able to get a two-out bases loaded walk in the seventh inning for its final run but it was too-little-too-late. Fabirkiewicz was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and the on RBI to lead the Beavers at the plate. Kali Irlmeier was 1-for-3 with a double while Karlee Noe also added one hit, and both players scored one run. Senior Grace Fuhrman suffered the loss on the mound after allowing five runs and seven hits over 4.2 innings. She struck out four and walked two.

It turned out to be a wild ending to game two against the Blue Devils (5-3). It was a 3-2 game going to the bottom of the sixth when UW-Stout would score three times and extend the margin to 6-2. BVU did come back and mount a comeback in the seventh starting with a two-run ground-rule double by Fabirkiewicz to make it 6-4. Merron then followed with a single to center that scored one but then the potential game-tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Fabirkiewicz went 2-for-4 with the two RBI while Merron was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Irlmeier also added two hits and scored twice.

Paige Mahler went the distance inside the circle and suffered the tough loss. She allowed nine hits but only one of the six runs she was charged with was earned.

Buena Vista dips to 0-4 on the year and is off until Sunday, March 8 when it plays a pair of games down in Clermont, Fla., to begin its spring trip. The team's first match-up is against Regis College at 8 a.m. (CST).
