DES MOINES, Iowa (Feb. 19, 2025) - The Buena Vista women's tennis team opened up its spring season on Tuesday against Grand View University inside of the Lifetime Fitness Center and was able to take advantage of short-handed Vikings squad to pick up a 5-2 victory.
Grand View picked up a 6-1 win in the No. 1 doubles match, and BVU was victorious at No. 3 due to forfeit, so the doubles point came down to the No. 2 match. BVU's tandem of
Hailey Meseck and
Macy Weller were down big in the match early, but never kept fighting and rallied all the way back for the 7-5 triumph and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, BVU was edged at both No. 1 and No. 2, but the team then responded in a big way by wining No. 3 and No. 4 before picking up forfeit wins at No. 5 and No. 6. At No. 3, Meseck rolled in straight sets before Abby King squeaked out a thrilling three-set tiebreaker victory.
"I am very happy for the ladies that they could start this spring season with a team victory," says BVU head coach
Dan Taylor. "Last fall was difficult; they worked extremely hard but the conference was so strong. They have continued to work and it paid off today. We did benefit from Grand View being down a couple players, but that doesn't take away from the effort and performance of our ladies."
"Macy and Hailey were down 5-2 going to six in doubles, and were even down set point. But they won six games in a row to take their doubles match and give us the doubles point. Hailey was very solid in her singles match, and Abby both started and finished strong in her win at #4 singles. Taylor played No. 1 for the first time today and battled hard against a tough player from Ecuador. Iris competed in her first college match and played some very good tennis as well. I am looking forward to seeing how the ladies perform Saturday when we travel to Minnesota to take on Minnesota-Morris!"
Start time on Saturday against the Cougars is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Following that match, the team will travel along with the BVU men to Hilton Head, S.C., for the annual Spring Break Trip (Mar. 3-7).
