Softball Swept in DH at Loras College

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Apr. 13, 2024) - The Buena Vista University softball team was back on the diamond Saturday for an American Rivers Conference doubleheader at Loras College, but the Duhawks edged the Beavers in both games by scores of 5-3 and 4-1.

A five-run third inning of game one proved to be the difference maker for Loras, as it was aided by a pair of sac flies and a 2-run home run to cap the inning.

Buena Vista clawed its way back during the middle innings with an RBI single in the fourth from Amanda Franke followed by a 2-run home run in the fifth off the bat of Maddy Elwood, her second home run of the year. The Beavers also got singles in the game from Paige Druskis and Nikki Griggs.

Kali Irlmeier pitched 2.2 innings and was charged with all five runs while suffering the loss. Kenize Dumbaugh entered in relief and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings.

The Duhawks' had only one extra-base hit in the nightcap, but it came in the first inning and drove home a pair for a 2-0 lead. They added a 2-run single in the fourth to extend the margin to 4-0. BVU pushed across its lone run in the fifth on bunt single from Danica Workman who recorded her second RBI of the year. The team also got singles in the game from Jillian Garcia, Druskis and Elwood.

Loras out-hit BVU 10-4 in the contest but stranded nine runners on base.

Keirsten Trayte allowed all four runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings of work. She was relieved by Grace Fuhrman who pitched the remaining 2.1 innings, scattering just two hits.

Buena Vista is now 7-23 overall (0-8 A-R-C) and is scheduled to host Central College on Tuesday, Apr. 16, at 3 p.m.
