Smash Gold picks up first win of season in NECC play

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Buena Vista University Smash Gold team picked up their first victory in NECC competition last night in a slug fest against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy St. Louis by a score of 2-1 (12-9, 10-12, 12-11). The Beavers are 1-2 in the league. 

In the first set of the game the Beavers came out firing as Matthew Forristal and Alexander Galati took nine of the 12 stocks. Forristal opened up play with four knockouts before giving the controllers to Galati. Galati then took five stocks off UHSP leaving just three stocks for the final two players to take for the victory. Nick Becker took two stocks before Voldy Kadisha finished the set. The Beavers won 12-9. 

In set two the Beavers got down 3-2 as Gregory Stueven led off the match. The Beavers only took three stocks before giving the controllers to Kadisha. Kadisha battled hard taking for stocks before getting eliminated. The Beavers fell 12-10. 

In set three the Beavers had to battle back from a deficit. The Beavers got down 7-5 before climbing back into the match. Kadisha took the controls needing to take for stocks to win the match. Kadisha battled and ended up squeaking out the victory 12-11. 

Next week the Beavers take on Missouri State University at 8 pm.
