WHITTIER, Calif. (March 12, 2023) - The Buena Vista softball team wrapped up its spring break trip on Sunday afternoon by dropping a pair of games at Whittier College by scores of 6-1 and 8-3, respectively.
In the opener it was the Poets leading 1-0 before
Jamie Wendt tied things up for the Beaver in the third inning with an RBI double. Whittier then went back in front with a sacrifice fly in the home half of the inning before going on and scoring a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for the five-run victory.
Paige Druskis had two of the team's five hits in the contest with
Amanda Franke scoring the run on Wendt's double. Freshman
Emma LaFave (2-2) got the start in the circle and pitched five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits.
Keirsten Trayte came on and pitched a perfect sixth.
The Beavers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, including a two-run single from LaFave. From there it was all Poets as they scored eight unanswered runs, including a five-run fifth.
BVU was held to only three singles in the contest and were out-hit 10-3.
Curah Rasmussen made the start and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just two runs and four hits before giving way to
Kennedi Claycomb who came on in relief to pitch 1.2 innings. She was ultimately charged with the loss after allowing five runs and four hits.
The Beavers (4-14) will return to the Midwest and are scheduled to play a pair of doubleheaders next weekend up in Minnesota against both Northwestern (Minn.) on March 18 and Saint Benedict on March 19.
