Box Score 2 LINCOLN, Neb. (April 26, 2022) - The Buena Vista softball team squeezed out a thrilling 1-0 victory in game one at Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday, but then dropped a heartbreaking 8-6 contest in game two on a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the seventh.
It was a pitcher's duel throughout the opener with the only run coming on a Nattie Murillo RBI single in the sixth inning. Senior
Ashtyn Miller was cruising for the Beavers, allowing just one hit while striking out eight and working around four walks to improve to 11-4 on the year. Murillo finished with two of the team's six hits in the contest.
BVU jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the nightcap and later extended the margin to 5-0 following a
Savanna Pohlmann 2-run home run to left. The Beavers remained in front 6-2 before the Prairie Wolves pulled within 6-4 in the fifth. NWU was then down to its final strike in the seventh with the bases loaded, and after a pair of foul balls, would end the game with a grand slam to left.
Miller came in and relieved starter
Peyton Gross in the fifth inning and would go on and suffer the loss.
Buena Vista is now 24-12 (8-6 A-R-C) and will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Wartburg (22-10, 9-5 A-R-C). The Beavers will need to sweep the Knights to claim a share of the regular season crown. First pitch in Waverly is set for 1:00 p.m.
