INDIANOLA, Iowa (April 19, 2022) - The Buena Vista softball team rallied with a four-run fifth inning in game one to hold off Simpson, 6-4, but the Beaver offense was held to just three hits in game two as Simpson shutout BVU, 2-0, for a doubleheader split.
The Storm grabbed a 3-1 lead in the opener after a 3-run first inning. The two teams traded runs in the third inning to make it 4-2 before the Beavers put up four runs in their half of the fifth to go in front at 6-4. Freshman
Chloe Wells highlighted the inning with a big 2-run single that gave the team the 5-4 advantage.
Both teams had their struggles on the defensive side, combining for nine errors in the contest that led to a combined six unearned runs.
Wells finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.Â
Carlee Guyett doubled and finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored,
Ashtyn Miller added two hits, as BVU totaled eight overall. Miller went the distance inside the circle, allowing four unearned runs on four hits, striking out eight and overcoming five walks.
Simpson got the scoring started in the nightcap with a solo home run to center in the first inning. That was the game's lone run until the fifth inning when the Storm got an RBI single for the game's final score.
BVU was held to just three singles in the game, including two from Nattie Murillo. The home run in the first was the game's only extra-base hit.
Peyton Gross suffered the loss for BVU, going the distance, allowing six hits and registering four strikeouts. Â
Buena Vista now sits at 21-11 overall (5-5 A-R-C) and move up to a tie for fourth overall. The 21 overall wins match the most in a single-season in the eight years under head coach
Mandie Nocita. The team has not won at least 22 games since going 22-12 back in 2001. The Beavers will look to reach that mark on Wednesday night as they are scheduled to host Central College (17-13, 5-5 A-R-C) in a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. The Dutch were swept Tuesday night at Nebraska Wesleyan by a pair of 3-2 scores.
