ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (March 20, 2022) - The Buena Vista softball team continued its weekend road schedule at No. 22 Saint Benedict on Sunday afternoon and walked away with a doubleheader split against a Bennies team that entered the day having won 11 of their first 12 games on the year.
BVU pushed across a run in the first inning of the opener on an RBI double from
Ashtyn Miller but then the Bennies took control with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to lead 3-1. Saint Benedict then added a single run in the fifth before tacking on four in the sixth en route to an 8-2 victory.
The Beavers were held to just three hits in the contest, including RBI doubles from Miller and
Jamie Wendt.Â
Peyton Gross (6-2) suffered the loss after going the distance and allowing all eight runs on eight hits.
Both teams went back-and-forth out of the gate in game two with each scoring single runs in the first and both plating two in their halves of the second. BVU then broke things open with a four-run third as a result of a pair of defensive miscues by the Bennies.Â
Rylee Cain reached on an error as a run scored before two more runners scored on an error by the rightfielder.
The Bennies put together a late-game rally in the seventh, getting a two-out, two-run single to pull within 7-5 before Miller got a flyout to end the game. The senior righthander came on and pitched the final five innings to earn the win and improve to 6-2. She allowed just the two runs on five hits while striking out five.Â
Kennedi Claycomb worked the first two innings and allowed three runs and three hits.
Guyett and Wendt each turned in two hits as did Madayln Elwood.
Buena Vista is now 16-6 overall and is set to play the home opener this Saturday afternoon against Webster University starting at 12:00 p.m.
