MANKATO, Minn. (February 20, 2022) - The Buena Vista softball team wrapped up its season-opening trip to the Mankato Dome by coming away with a strong 6-2 victory over St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon to complete a split of games on the day after falling to Concordia (Minn.) 11-5 in the opener.
Against the Oles,
Jamie Wendt was 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI, including a big two-run single in the seventh inning that made it a 5-2 advantage. She also singled home a run in the first inning before driving in a run with an RBI groundout in the third.Â
Carlee Guyett was 1-for-1 with three walks and three runs scored while
Alyssa Barnhart also walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
BVU built a 3-0 lead and held onto it until St. Olaf, which outhit the Beavers 9-6 in the game, pushed across two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to within 3-2. Â
Ashtyn Miller earned the win inside the circle after going 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs.Â
Peyton Gross pitched two innings scoreless and recorded her first save of the year while striking out three.
The Cobbers scored four runs in the third inning to break a scoreless game and never looked back. They went on to added two more in the fourth before coming for five more runs over the sixth and seventh innings. The Beavers scored in each of the final three innings, including a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Wendt added two more hits to help lead the way offensively, while Nattie Murillo also added two including a solo home run in the seventh to finish with two RBI.Â
Kennedi Claycomb also added a solo home run in the final frame while
Ashtyn Miller turned in an RBI triple in the sixth.
Claycomb pitched 6.1 innings and suffered the loss. She was charged with all 11 runs (seven earned) and walked eight. Gross came on two record the final two outs.
Buena Vista is now 2-2 on the year and will travel to Chesterfield, Mo., next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 26-27) to play four games over the two days. It will begin by facing Carroll University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday before ending the day against Millikin University at 1:00 p.m.
