Evans' Hat Trick Leads Men's Soccer to OT Victory against Dordt

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Sept. 11, 2021) - Buena Vista junior Braedan Evans scored three times including the game-winner 56 seconds into overtime to help lead the Beaver men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over visiting Dordt University on Saturday afternoon inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

The Defenders broke a scoreless contest and took a 1-0 lead into halftime with a goal by Blake Hansen at the 43:08 mark of the contest.  BVU came out firing in the second half, tying things up just three minutes in when Evans took a pass from Brody Steinfeldt that he was able to punch past the Defenders keeper who came out to contend the pass.  Less than one minute later, Evans put the Beavers in front by converting the first of his two penalty kick opportunities for his third goal of the year.

The 2-1 BVU lead held up until the Defenders scored consecutive goals just one minute apart midway through the second half.  Hansen scored the first of those two for Dordt before CJ Schultz converted a corner kick with a header just in front of the box.

Freshman Sota Usui, an international student who just joined the team at the start of the week, came through in the clutch with just 1:06 left by coming up with a deflected throw-in from Jacob Shirley to knock in is first career goal.  Evans then sent the team in a frenzy with his third goal off another lead pass from Steinfeldt from the left side.

Dordt, which dropped to 0-4-2, held a slim 12-8 advantage in overall shots while each team tallied six on-goal.  Evans had five shots (all on-goal) and three goals with Zachary Tretler adding two shots.  Isaiah Thomas was tough in-goal for BVU, defensively, coming up with three saves while playing the entire match.

Buena Vista improves to 1-2 overall and will look to even its record on Tuesday, September 14, when it travels to Crown College for a 7:00 p.m. match.
