Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 12, 2021) - Junior
Carrie Dose scorched a ball over the fence in left for a grand slam that sparked a 6-run first inning for the No. 8 seed Buena Vista softball team as the Beavers cruised to an 8-0 (5 inning) victory over No. 9 seed Loras College on Wednesday afternoon in the play-in game of the 2021 American Rivers Conference Softball Tournament.
Michaela Mason led off the game with a double into the left field corner and came around to score one batter later on
Kayden Archibeque's RBI single. After a Duhawk error followed by a
Rylee Cain single to load the bases, Dose, who had just 13 at-bats on the year coming into the contest, unleashed for her first career home run that blew the game open at 6-0.
That was more than enough for junior
Peyton Gross on the mound, as she was in cruise control for most of the contest, allowing just four hits and striking out two en route to her sixth win and first shutout of the season.
Archibeuqe tacked on her second RBI of the contest with another RBI single that scored Mason before Dose laced a hard single to left that got passed the left fielder and rolled all the way to the fence, scoring pinch runner
Olivia Larsen all the way from first to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Dose finished 2-for-3 with the four RBI while Archibeque and Cain also added two hits. Mason led the way with three hits and scored two runs. The win was the fourth for BVU over the Duhawks this season.
The play-in victory pushes the Beavers into the double-elimination bracket and a match-up with No. 1 seed Coe College on Thursday, May 13, at noon. The winner of that contest will advance to play the winner of No. 4 Luther and No. 5 Simpson at 4:00 p.m. The loser will turn right around and play the loser of the Norse and the Storm at 2:00 p.m. in the first elimination game. Simpson and Luther will kick-off the day by playing each other at 10:00 a.m.
