Dubuque visits town for 3-game Softball series

STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 30, 2021) - The Buena Vista University softball team continues its homestand this weekend for a three-game series against the University of Dubuque.  The first two games of the match-up take place this afternoon out at the BVU / Storm Lake High School Softball Complex.

LAST TIME OUT 
The Beavers split a doubleheader at home against Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday evening. BVU captured a thrilling 2-0 victory in the opener before dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 (9 inning) game in the nightcap after leading in the seventh inning.  
 

SCOUTING DUBUQUE
The Spartans have dropped four straight games and six of their last eight overall.  The team began the year at 8-2 overall and took 2-of-3 from Wartburg to begin the conference schedule.  It also has an A-R-C series victory over Loras and has picked up single wins over both Luther and Central, respectively.  Its most recent series was at home versus Coe where it was held to just six runs combined in the three games.  The Spartans are ranked fourth during league play with a .303 batting average and in runs scored (115).  Their 35 doubles are second and just one behind Coe for the league lead while their 18 home runs against A-R-C foes are tied for third.  Rachel Trader leads the team in conference play and sits 10th among A-R-C players with a .393 average.  Emily Bloomer is near the top of the list with her seven doubles and is third in RBI with 20.  The team has also pitched effectively, ranking third among conference foes with a 3.85 ERA.  It hasn't been an overpowering staff with the second-most hits allowed and among the fewest strikeouts at 38.  Lexi Schmidt has a team-high five wins during league play and a 4.50 ERA over 78 innings.  Nicolette Evans has a staff low 1.99 in 31.2 innings pitched against conference foes while going 2-4 in those contests.  
 

BVU NOTES
--Senior Carlee Guyett leads the team with a .391 batting average this season. 

--BVU ranks sixth overall in the A-R-C in team batting average (.274) 

--The Beavers are tied for third overall with 52 doubles, 13 behind league-leading Dubuque (65) 

-- Guyett is tied for third in the league this season lead with 10 doubles and needs one more to become the program's all-time career leader

-- BVU is third in the A-R-C with 71 stolen bases and is 20th overall in DIII 

-- Miller is third among all pitchers in the conference with 88 strikeouts on the mound this season 

--  The Beavers have not dropped more than three straight games all season 

-- Ashtyn Miller was named the A-R-C Softball Position Player of the Week on March 15 

ON DECK: The Beavers will play the final game of the weekend series at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 2 in Storm Lake.  Next week will mark the final week of the team's regular season.  It will begin its 3-game weekend road series at Central College on Thursday, May 6 at 3:00 p.m. before turning right around to play the final game of its series with Nebraska Wesleyan in Storm Lake on Friday, May 7 at 4 p.m.  The final regular season game is on Sunday, May 9, when it heads back to Pella for game three of its series with the Dutch.
