STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 18, 2021) - The Buena Vista softball team built an early 6-0 lead but couldn't close the door late as the Beavers saw Wartburg College come all the way back to win the game 8-6 and take the series 2-1.
Junior
Ashtyn Miller put BVU on the board in the first with a big two-run double to deep center field. She then capped a four-run second inning with another two-run double to the gap in left center field to make it 6-0. Earlier in that inning, senior
Carlee Guyett doubled down the left field line to score a run, and that double gives her 39 in her career which ties the school record previously held by Libby Kestel (1982-85).
The offense for the Beavers was then held in check the rest of the way as Wartburg wa able to hang around and erupt for six runs in the fifth inning to pull even at 6-6. The Knights got a big two-run triple to dead center to make it 6-4 and then tied things with two outs on a dropped fly ball.
Kari Sherwood, who led the league in home runs entering the weekend, sent a solo shot over the fence in left field in the seventh for her 13th of the year to give Wartburg it first lead of the day. The Knights (21-6, 12-5 A-R-C) added an insurance run later in the inning for a two-run cushion. Sherwood finished with a game-high three hits and added three RBI.
BVU tried to rally in the seventh as
Michaela Mason drew a leadoff walk but then Wartburg was able to turn a 6-4-3 double play to end any further threat.
Miller (2-for-3) was the only player for the Beavers to finish with multiple hits as the team finished with seven overall. She also went the distance on the mound, allowing six earned runs and eight hits while striking out four and walking four.
Buena Vista drops to 14-13 overall (6-9 A-R-C) and will host Nebraska Wesleyan for a doubleheader on Wednesday evening. First pitch of game one is set for 4:00 p.m.
