Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. (March 7, 2021) - The Buena Vista softball team played a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on Sunday on the final day of the Fontbonne Invitational, but the Beavers came up just short in both outings, falling to No. 9 DePauw, 3-1, before dropping a tough 2-0 contest against No. 12 Transylvania.
DePauw (7-0) took a 2-0 lead in the third before BVU cut the deficit in half with its lone run in the fourth on a Mckynze Hansen RBI single. DePauw added an insurance run in the fifth and the Beavers got a runner to second and the tying run to the plate in the seventh but a pop-up to short ended the threat.
Five different players tallied one hit for BVU with
Carlee Guyett scoring the team's run after a lead-off walk. BVU held DePauw to six hits but did commit three errors.
Ashtyn Miller (3-1) suffered her first loss of the seson inside the circle despite going the distance and striking out nine.
The Pioneers (7-0) scored both runs of their contest in the fourth inning in what was a pitcher's duel throughout. Both teams tallied five hits overall, including doubles for the Beavers by both Guyett and
Savanna Pohlmann.
Peyton Gross pitched a complete-game with two earned runs allowed on five hits. She struck out five and walked two.
Buena Vista is now 6-4 overall and will look to get back into the win column on Monday afternoon when the team travels to Greenville University (0-2) for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. The Lady Panthers have not played since Feb. 28 when they were swept in a pair of five-inning games against DePauw.
