Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. (March 6, 2021) - The Buena Vista softball team began its three-day road trip underway on Saturday by splitting a pair of games. The Beavers pulled away late in the opener against host Fontbonne University to win 12-2 before falling to a tough Washington University-St. Louis team, 9-2.
The Griffins (0-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before BVU came back and took the lead for good with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Junior Ashtyn MIller got the scoring going for the Beavers with a two-run single before later scoring home to make it 3-1.
Kayden Archibeque added an RBI single and
Carlee Guyett a run-scoring double in the fourth to make it a four-run lead. Fontbonne got one run back in the bottom half for a 5-2 game.
Miller later added a big three-run double in the seven-run seventh inning as the Beavers broke things open. Miller finished the game by going 2-for-4 with five RBI. Guyett, along with
Alyssa Barnhart, turned in three hits and combining to score five times. Mckynze Hansen and
Savanna Pohlmann each had two hits as BVU recorded 16 overall. Miller also picked up the win on the mound by going 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs on two hits and striking out six.
Carrie Dose pitched the final three frames to earn her first save of the year. She allowed just one hit and struck out two.
WashU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game of the day by scoring a pair of runs in the first, second an fourth innings. The two teams traded runs in the fifth before the Bears (1-2) added two more in the seventh and the Beavers one in the bottom half on a
Carlee Guyett double.
Guyett had three hits in the contest as the team had seven overall.
Peyton Gross made the start and suffered her first loss of the year. She was charged with seven runs (five earned) over five innings.
Buena Vista is now 6-2 overall and will get set to play both DePauw and Transylvania on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
