STORM LAKE, Iowa (February 26, 2021) - The Buena Vista softball team won a pair of games to begin the season last Saturday inside of the Mankato State Dome, and the Beavers will return to the same place again this weekend and play a pair of doubleheaders against both Northwestern-St. Paul and Bethany Lutheran, respectively.

LAST TIME OUT
The Beavers picked up wins last Saturday against both Bethany Lutheran (10-0, 5 inn.) and Northwestern-St. Paul (9-6), inside of the MSU Dome to open the 2021 campaign. Junior
Ashtyn Miller went the distance in the opener against the Vikings and scattered just three hits and struck out nine. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI while senior
Carlee Guyett went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. In the nightcap, the Beavers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but after the Eagles tied it at 5-5 in the fourth, BVU came right back with two runs in the bottom half and added two insurance runs in the sixth.Â
Savanna Pohlmann turned in three hits to lead the way while
Michaela Mason added two. Five players drove in a run for the Beavers, who finished with 20 base hits on the day.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN-ST. PAUL
The Eagles dropped their opener against BVU but then came back and knocked off the Vikings, 6-4. Shelby Stoll and Briggs Carlson each finished the day with four hits and combined for 10 total bases. As a team, Northwestern has 17 hits but only four went for extra-bases. The team attempted only two stolen bases. The team was solid defensively, committing only one error. Samantha Burkhart picked up the win over BLC, going four innings and surrendering only three runs. Diana Boyce came on in relief and picked up the save. She appeared in both games for the Eagles, and through six total innings of work, has allowed four earned runs and seven hits.
SCOUTING BETHANY LUTHERAN
The Vikings have been held to just five runs through four games and have been shutout twice. The team is hitting .229 overall with Katelyn Halbach, Zoe Kinakin and Eden Ambrose all with three hits on the year and each hitting over .300. Alyssa Kosta has the team's lone home run and has driven in two of the team's five runs. Kassidy Cunningham has started three games inside the circle and has a 10.67 ERA over 14.1 innings. She has six strikeouts and seven walks. Kosta has made the other start and has pitched 6.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs.
ON DECK
The Beavers are scheduled to continue their non-conference schedule next weekend with a doubleheader at Greenville on Friday (Mar. 5) before traveling to St. Louis, Mo., for a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 6) against Fontbonne before playing both WashU and Illinois College in single games on Sunday (Mar. 7).
