Beavers Keep Tournament Hopes Alive with Sweep of Duhawks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STORM LAKE - Savanna Pohlmann blasted a walk-off three-run homerun to left in the fifth inning of game two that completed a much-needed sweep of Loras College on Tuesday afternoon as the Beavers kept their conference tournament hopes alive.

With two outs and runners at first and second, Pohlmann lined a shot over the fence in left center for her first career home run and keep the Beavers in the race for the sixth and final tournament berth with four games remaining.

BVU took a 5-0 lead to the fifth inning after scoring a run in the second inning and then adding four big insurance runs in the third.  The Beavers took advantage of a pair of Duhawk errors in the third to score three of its five runs and also added another on a hard-hit RBI single down the left field line from Ashtyn Miller.

Freshman Peyton Gross improved to 9-3 on the season after pitching all five innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five.

Miller was 3-for-3 at the plate in the contest and also scored a run while five others added on hit.  Pohlmann's homerun was the only extra-base hit for the Beavers among their eight hits overall.

It was the Loras defense that helped BVU out at the end of game one as well as the Duhawks committed erros on back-to-back plays in the ninth inning that set-up Carlee Guyett's walk-off RBI single up the middle.

Trailing 4-3, Kate Lesmeister got the rally started by drawing a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After another walk and fielder's choice, BVU had runners at first and third with two outs before Loras committed a fielding error at shortstop to score the tying run before a second straight error loaded the bases for Guyett.

The game was tied 2-2 after the third inning and remained that way until the eighth when each team scored a run.  Loras took a 3-2 lead on an RBI double in the top half before Guyett came through in the clutch again with a run-scoring single with one out.  BVU had a chance to win the game in the eighth after putting runners on first and second with just one out but a ground out and a fly out ended that threat.

Guyett was 3-for-5 with a walk and two RBI in the contest.  Pohlmann had two more hits in the contest and also walked twice.  Sydney Carroll put BVU on the board with her fourth home run of the year in the second inning.  She finished with a pair of hits.  Lesmeister also chimed in with a pair of base knocks as BVU had 12 overall.

Marissa Promes continues her strong stretch in the circle, going all nine innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three earned runs en route to her fourth win of the year.

Buena Vista has extends its current win streak to three games and improves to 17-15 overall (3-9 A-R-C).  It keeps its tournament hopes alive and will now travel to the University of Dubuque (18-11, 3-7 A-R-C) for another pivotal doubleheader on Friday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m.
