Softball Picks up 20th Win of the Year during DH at Loras

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Buena Vista softball team extended its win streak to four games with a thrilling 6-5 triumph to begin an Iowa Conference doubleheader at Loras College on Sunday afternoon, but the host Duhawks came back to win the finale, 6-1.

Loras built a 4-0 lead in the opener after two innings before BVU began chipping away at that margin.  Carlee Guyett, who set the school record for doubles in a season with her lead-off two-bagger in yesterday's opener at Coe, found the gap yet again to put the Beavers on the board with a two-run base knock in the third.  Michaela Mason followed up with an RBI-single to score Guyett before Kate Lesmeister later singled to score Mason.  Autumn Boland put BVU in front for the first time and capped off the five-run frame with an RBI groundout.

Lesmeister drove home a big insurance run in the seventh with an RBI groundout as Marissa Promes worked around a bases loaded jam in the bottom half, despite allowing one run to cross, as the Beavers hung on for the thrilling win.

Guyett finished 2-for-4 with the two RBI and one run scored while Lesmeister, Boland and Kennedy Colvert also tallied two hits each.  Michaela Mason scored twice and also swiped her 20th base of the year which is a new single-season record, breaking the previous mark she reached a year ago and shared with Stephanie Hayden (2014).  She's second all-time with 39 career stolen bases and is 10 shy of reaching the all-time mark of 49 held by Hayden and Megan Coe.

Promes came on in relief in the second after starter Moriah Guyett allowed five runs and kept Loras off the board until it plated the one run in the seventh.  Promes is now 9-5 overall.

Guyett added another RBI double for the Beavers in third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1, but it was all Duhawks from there as they scored twice more in the fourth to go along with two insurance runs in the sixth.  Guyett finished with two hits in the contest as did Boland, including a double.

Guyett went the distance on the mound, allowing just three earned runs as BVU committed three errors, defensively.

Buena Vista is now 20-12 on the year and 5-7 in confernece play.  It marks the third straight 20-win campaign for BVU as the team climbs into sixth in the IIAC standings.  The team looks to finish the regular season strong, starting with Wednesday's doubleheader at home against the University of Dubuque on Senior Day.  Game one is slated for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
