Box Score 2 The Buena Vista softball team ran into a very tough Luther College softball team on the road Tuesday afternoon, and the Beavers came up short in its bid to keep its win streak alive by falling 5-3 and 11-2 (6) to the Norse.
Luther led the entire way in the opener, building a 5-0 lead. The Norse put two runs on the board in the first before adding two more insurance runs in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.
Senior Stephanie Hayden got BVU on the board in the sxith with a solo home run to left, but the Norse quickly got the run back in their half of the inning on an error by the Beavers.
Things did get interesting in the seventh as the Beavers tried to rally and pull of the upset. Back-to-back singles to start the inning had runners at the corners with no outs. Lacey Vokt then stole second before Keely Bycroft doubled home both runners to make it 6-3.
After a walk and a sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position with one out, the Norse were able to work their way out of the jam by getting a fielder's choice and a flyout to end it.
Hayden went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for BVU with Schmidt and Bycroft doubling. The Beavers were held to just six hits in the contest.
Jenna Falline got the start and suffered the loss. She pitched 4.1 innings and surrendered four runs (three earned) on 12 hits. Bycroft worked the final 1.2 innings and allowed an unearened run on three hits.
The Norse had five players with at least two hits as they finished with 15 overall.
Game two was close until the final inning when the Norse erupted for eight runs. They took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the third before BVU got a two-run home run from Cheyanne Boland to even things up at 2-2.
Luther (32-2, 10-0 IIAC) regained the lead in the bottom half with an RBI single before the flood gates opened in the sixth. A three-run home run made it 6-2 before back-to-back RBI singles made it an 8-2 lead. The game ended a few batters later on the second three-run home run of the inning which made it 11-2.
Buena Vista (15-16-1, 6-6 IIAC) was held to only four hits with Boland's home run serving as the only extra-base knock.
Moriah Guyett went the distance on the mound and fell to 6-7 overall. She allowed 11 runs on 13 hits, despite striking out five and walking three.
Buena Vista will now wrap up its confernece slate this Saturday when it travels to Pella, Iowa to take on #18 Central College. The Dutch split a doubleheader on Tuesday against Coe College.
