Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The regular season Iowa Conference season came to an end on Saturday afternoon for the Buena Vista softball team, but the Beavers came up on the short end of a pair of games at home to #10 Luther College by scores of 8-0 (5) and 4-3.
The Norse held a 1-0 lead in the opener heading to the fourth inning when they were able to take advantage of some sloppy BVU defense and break the game open with five runs. They then added two more in the fifth. The Beavers committed six errors in the contest.
Offensively, BVU was held to only two hits in the contest - a double from Sam Engleman and a single from Stephanie Hayden.
Jenna Falline got the start and suffered the loss, despite not allowing an earned run.
Game two was tied throughout. The Norse got on the board with a run in the first and that's the way the score stood until BVU got a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth to even things at 1-1.
Luther got a pair of runs in the sixth to build a 3-1 advantage, but Engleman, in her last collegiate at-bat on her home field, blasted a two-run home run through the fierce wind in left center field to pull the team back even at 3-3.
The Norse then scored the eventual game-winning run on a bang-bang play at the plate in the seventh with two outs.
Aside from Engleman's long ball, Jordon Pilcher had the only other hit for the Beavers.
Brittney Kubik, who was also playing in her final collegiate home game, got the start and went the distance on the mound for BVU, allowing 10 hits, striking out two and walking two.
Buena Vista wraps up the regular season at 13-19 overall (5-9 IIAC). The team will be the sixth seed in next week's Iowa Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by regular season champion, Coe College. BVU will take on the third seed which has not yet been determined at the time of this release.
