Volleyball Moves up IIAC Standings with Pivotal Home Win over Spartans

In what was a back-and-forth match from the opening serve to the final kill, the Buena Vista volleyball team stayed perfect on their home court this season with a thrilling five-set Iowa Conference victory over visiting Dubuque on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Ali Grien registered a match-high 19 kills to lead four Beavers who finished with at least 10.  Fellow senior Jade Schaap was next at 13 kills and 17 digs to go along with six total blocks.  Senior Jamie Navinskey also had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs whie Serena Sandvig chipped in with 10 kills a team-best .348 attack percentage.

Mackenzie Gropel dished out a career-high 46 assists and completed her first career double-double by adding 17 digs.  Summer Goss led the way with 22 digs while Kylie Roe chimed in with 10.

The Spartans had 14 kills and just three errors in the opening set and pulled away late for a 25-20 victory.  BVU scored the first four points of the second hit, including back-to-back blocks to get things started, and the Beavers never looked back from there.  The lead grew to 10-5 and 15-8 before Dubuque tried to make a late push.  The Spartans got as close as one at 17-16 and it stayed a one-point margin until an ace serve from Goss made it 22-19.  BVU then ended with consecutive kills from Grein and Schaap to pull even at one set apiece.

Dubuque then scored the first three points of the third and maintained a three and four point margin throughout to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win.

BVU again had an answer in the fourth, and after taking a 4-1 lead early on, pulled away again late to force a decisive fifth set.

The Beavers scored the first two points of the fifth on kills from Brooke Runneberg and Schaap, respectively, before the Spartans came back to tie things at 4-4.  After an attack error by the Beavers gave the Spartans their first lead of the set at 6-5, BVU then rolled off three straight blocks to regain an 8-6 lead as the teams switched sides.

Dubuque would pull even again at 10-10, and the score was also tied at 11 and 12 before two straight hitting errors gave BVU match point.  The Spartans got a kill coming out of a timeout to make it 14-13, and after BVU called timeout, Grein put down her 19th kill of the match to send the Beavers to their third straight home victory of the week and a 5-0 mark inside of Siebens Fieldhouse for the year.  The team is now 17-5 on its home court since the start of the 2014 campaign.

Karrah Davis registered a team-leading 19 kills for Dubuque which lost for only the second time all year (20-2, 5-2 IIAC).

Buena Vista is now 13-9 overall (3-3 IIAC) and will now host Central College on Tuesday night at 7:30pm.
