Jade Schaap had a match-high 29 kills while Ali Grein followed with 12, as the senior duo helped lead the Buena Vista volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Grinnell College during Tuesday's home opener.
Schaap finished with 73 total attempts and set a school record for kills in a four-set match. Her total was just one off her single-match career-high set as a freshman. Her and Grein each finished the match with an attack percentage over .300 as the team posted a .231 mark. Jamie Navinskey had seven kills and 12 digs.
BVU stormed out of the gate with 18 kills in the first set alone en route to a commanding 25-12 victory.
"We came out and did alot of things right in the opening set," said head coach Lori Slight following the match. After that, though, we had alot of mental errors and have to be alot better as we start conference play."
The Pioneers built an early lead in the second set and BVU was unable to recover and fell 25-21.
When things got tight down the stretch in both the third and fourth sets, BVU did come through in the clutch and went on to win 25-21 and 25-23, respectively, to improve to 14-5 at home since the start of 2014.
"We did buckle down when the match was on the line," added Slight. "We need to be more unified as a team and execute much better on every point. I give Grinnell alot of credit as they are a much improved team."
Buena Vista extends its current overall win streak to four and is now 5-3 overall. The Beavers will have a short turnaround before opening Iowa Conference play inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Thursday, September 14, against Nebraska Wesleyan. Match time is set for 7:30pm. The JV teams will square-off starting at 6:00pm.
