The Buena Vista women's track and field team had a handful of top-five performances on Saturday at the Darren Young Classic, hosted by Grinnell College, as the Beavers took fifth overall.
Kylie Johnston scored points in a pair of sprint events for the Beavers, taking fourth in the 60-meter dash and eighth in the 200-meter dash. Brittini Thomas shined yet again the 60-meter hurdles by taking second in a new personal best time of 9.54 seconds. She finished just .23 seconds behind Wartburg's Maggi Bjustrom. Thomas and Johnston each ran legs on the 4x200 meter relay team that took fourth in 1:53.16.
Cristyn Eischeid had a big personal best toss in the shot at 12.17m surpassing her previous best of 12.09m. She took third in the event and is currently ranked ninth in the Iowa Conference. She also placed fifth in the weight throw with another personal best toss of 14.34 meters.
The Beavers totaled 33 points on the day and took fifth overall among the 10 teams competing. It finished ahead of a pair of IIAC foes in Simpson and Central.
"The ladies had a really good day today!" said head coach Colt Slack. "Brittini Thomas finished runner-up in the 60 hurdles and Cristyn Eischeid finished 3rd in the shot put. Kylie Johnston scored in both the 60 and the 200. The distance crew also had some solid performances as well as some short and long sprinters! As the conference championships approach, the team continues to improve! It will be nice to be back home next weekend where we always compete well!"
Next weekend, the team returns back to its home track when it hosts the National Junior College Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 16-17). That'll be the team's final tune-up before the IIAC championships in two weeks.
